Often called China's first public museum, founded in 1905 by the educator Zhang Jian on the bank of the Hao River near central Nantong as a museum and garden in one, combining from the start natural history, history, art and education. Its wide garden is dotted with old buildings in Chinese and Western styles, among them the three original halls and the Haonan Villa that was the founder's home, set among trees, ponds, pavilions and blossoms that flower in spring. The museum holds some fifty thousand objects, above all Neolithic finds, along with natural history specimens such as the Chinese sturgeon, ship models and the kites the region is known for. Entry is free; the galleries are open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, closed on Mondays, and the gardens from 6 am to 6 pm, per visitor guides.

Nantong has noodle restaurants run by Hui Muslims under the halal sign, while the city's cooking leans on seafood and also uses pork, so ask about ingredients.
