The oldest part of Shenzhen and the city's origin, an old walled town that was the seat of Xin'an County, which once covered today's Shenzhen and Hong Kong; the area's history goes back to the year 331. The town stood on the sea route of south China facing Qianhai Bay and was seen as the gatekeeper of the Pearl River and the way to Guangzhou; its old south gate and parts of its walls still stand. The old town has been restored and revived, its narrow lanes now holding traditional houses, small museums, galleries, cafés and shops alongside its residents, blending history with everyday life. Entry is free and open all day; afternoon into evening is best. It's a lovely stop for seeing Shenzhen before the skyscrapers, near Nantou Ancient City metro station.
