A nature reserve for macaque monkeys on the Nanwan Peninsula in Lingshui County, about an hour's drive east of Sanya; it is called an island although it joins the mainland, and it has been protected by the state since 1965, when only about a hundred monkeys lived here, while today there are more than 1,500. The reserve covers 10.2 square kilometres of hills, 95% of them forested, and visitors arrive by a 2,138-metre cable car over Xincun Harbour, one of China's longest over-water cable cars, which passes above the floating raft village of the Tanka fishing people. The monkeys roam freely along the roads and paths and come close to visitors, and the reserve also shelters other animals such as sambar deer, leopard cats and otters, with walking trails and lookouts over the sea. Tickets including the cable car are about CNY 163 from October to April and about CNY 156 from May to September, per visitor guides. Do not feed the monkeys, keep your bag closed and hold on to glasses and phones, as the monkeys are bold and snatch things.
