China's national museum of the sea, on the coast of Tianjin's Binhai New Area, opened for trial operation on 1 May 2019 and described as the largest maritime museum in the world, its long halls reaching out towards the sea. Its galleries cover China's maritime history and ocean life, from ancient ships and sea trade routes to ocean life and fossils, in vast halls built for huge exhibits. Entry is free with a real-name booking through its official account; it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, last entry 4 pm, and closed on Mondays, per visitor guides. It is about an hour by car from central Tianjin.
