Yes on the easier sections and with a licensed operator providing a guide, equipment and initial instruction. The harder sections require real experience. Book ahead and state your level honestly — the river is fast and the walls are close, and this is not a place to overestimate your ability.
If water activity or climbing is your aim, yes, and it is among the best in Austria for that. If you want mountain views and lakes, the Dachstein area and the Salzkammergut around Hallstatt itself are finer and far closer.

A national park in Styria centred on the gorge of the river Enns, where the river cuts between steep limestone walls in one of the narrowest valleys in Austria. The name is descriptive: Gesäuse means the roaring, and refers to the sound of the river driving through the gorge. That sound is part of the experience and a visitor hears it before seeing the water. The park is known for whitewater activity — kayaking and rafting on sections graded at different difficulties — alongside rock climbing on the limestone walls and mountain walking routes. That makes it a destination for activity rather than for looking, unlike other parks. Practical points: the distance from Hallstatt is about eighty kilometres east and access is realistic by car, though a railway line runs through the valley. Water activities are organised through licensed operators and need booking and equipment; they are not undertaken independently. The season runs from late spring to early autumn.
