Two tiered waterfalls on the Barú River in dense rainforest near the southern Pacific coast, the upper dropping about forty-five metres over a broad rock face before the water falls again in the lower cascade into a wide green pool, making it one of Costa Rica's loveliest waterfall sets. They stand on land run for decades by a local family. Visitors reach them on foot along a country track through forest and farms, about four kilometres each way with ups and downs, by dedicated shuttle trucks or on horseback on organised tours. The lower fall has a pool where swimming is allowed in marked areas, and a side lookout shows both falls together. The track passes giant trees, streams and colourful birds. The water rises and turns dangerous after heavy rain, and swimming may close, so follow the staff's instructions. Bring water and comfortable shoes.
