A European-style open square at the heart of Sandton, Africa's richest financial district in north Johannesburg, designed after St Mark's Square in Venice and ringed by restaurants, cafés and upmarket shops. In the middle stands a six-metre bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, unveiled in 2004 when the square was renamed after him, showing him smiling in his well-known dance, now one of the most photographed spots in Johannesburg. The square connects to Sandton City mall, and together they form one of the continent's largest shopping complexes with hundreds of shops, plus a theatre and a library. It is safe and comfortable for families and makes a break between the city's sights. Entry is free, and it is liveliest in the evening when the restaurants fill. Sandton has many hotels, making it a convenient base for many visitors to Johannesburg.
