Ngardmau Waterfall is a wide fall pouring off a dark rock face in thick forest, on a river in Ngardmau State on the west of Babeldaob, Palau's largest island. The water falls in many white strands like a curtain, with a shallow pool among rocks below. Ngardmau State lies on the north-west coast of Babeldaob and has only about 185 people. Its interior has rolling hills that rise to the highest ground in Palau, and near the upper reaches of the river is the big waterfall. Forest covers the upper slopes and mangroves line the coast. You walk a trail through the rainforest to reach the foot of the falls. You stand in the spray or swim in the pool. The walk itself is part of the pleasure, among ferns and tall trees. The falls are about 30 km in a straight line north of Koror. Visitors pay a small fee that we could not confirm. The trail is slippery and muddy after rain, so wear suitable shoes and bring water.
