A 5.7 km cable car on Lantau Island, climbing from Tung Chung town to the Ngong Ping plateau in a ride of about 25 minutes. It opened in September 2006 and is one of the most scenic cable car rides in Asia. The cabins glide over Tung Chung Bay and Hong Kong International Airport with planes coming in to land, then over Lantau's green hills and mountain trails; on clear days the view stretches out to the South China Sea. For more thrills there are «Crystal» cabins with glass floors, so you see the forest and the sea beneath your feet. At the top is the Ngong Ping tourist village with restaurants and shops, close to the giant bronze Tian Tan statue and Po Lin Monastery. A standard return is HK$295 for adults and a Crystal cabin return HK$365, per the official website. Go in the morning on a clear day, as queues build after noon, and the cable car can stop in strong winds.
