Ngwe Saung Beach is a resort on the Bay of Bengal coast in the Ayeyarwady Region, about 48 km west of the city of Pathein. Its silver sand runs for about 15 km, lined with palms, making it one of the longest and quietest beaches in Myanmar. The resort opened in 2000, newer than nearby Chaung Tha Beach, and was designed for visitors wanting more calm and roomier hotels. People from Yangon come here on holidays, and the drive takes at least five hours. The beach hosted the sailing events of the 2013 Southeast Asian Games. You walk on soft sand between palms and waves, and near the shore you see two rocks each topped by a small golden stupa. At the southern end is a small green island you can walk out to at low tide, with clear water around it. You can take a boat to the outer islands or spend the day swimming and resting. Pathein is about 38 km away in a straight line. The sea is calm in winter and rough in the rainy season. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to this area, so read the current advice before you plan.
