A fortified mountain pass in the Taihang range on the Shanxi-Hebei border, once one of the main routes between the two provinces and known as the «Ninth Pass of the Great Wall». First called Weize Pass, it became the Ladies' Pass after the army of Princess Pingyang, daughter of the Tang dynasty's founder, whose troops are said to have held it. The present fort dates from 1542, under the Ming, ringed by mountains over 1,000 m high with rivers winding through the valleys below, and in the village beneath it a waterfall tumbles between the houses, beside Pingyang Lake and homes on the water. The joint ticket for the fort, waterfall, lake and water village is about CNY 65, less in winter, open from 8 am to 7 pm from April to October and 8.30 am to 5 pm the rest of the year, per visitor guides.
