Harder Kulm is closer and quicker (a direct funicular from Interlaken, 10 minutes), cheaper, and its famous platform juts out above the town — but it is lower and much busier. The Niederhorn is higher, slightly further, far quieter, with a wider view (both lakes together), the ibex and the trails. For a quick sunset visit: Harder Kulm. For a calm mountain day with the better view: Niederhorn.

The Niederhorn is a 1,963-metre peak above Lake Thun, and the **best nearby and relatively cheap viewpoint** in the region: from its summit you see both lakes (Thun and Brienz) with Interlaken between them from above, and directly opposite the wall of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up in a row — the view people pay many times more to reach from higher summits. Access is by funicular from Beatenbucht on the lakeshore up to Beatenberg, then a cable car to the summit (about 30 minutes in all). At the top are a restaurant with a terrace and ridge walking paths, including the "ibex trail" — the mountain is the region's most famous place **to see wild ibex** at close range, especially early in the morning. There are also trottibike descents and walking routes down. Far quieter than Harder Kulm and much cheaper than the high mountains — an excellent alternative on a clear day for anyone unwilling to pay for a Jungfraujoch ticket.
