Nigardsbreen is a glacier arm of the large Jostedalsbreen glacier, in the Jostedalen valley in Luster municipality, Vestland county, western Norway, about 30 km north of the village of Gaupne and 25 km east of Olden in a straight line. In the first half of the 18th century cold weather made the glacier grow, advancing about four kilometres between 1700 and 1748 and crushing nine farms, which gave it its name, «nine farms». By 1748 it covered about 48 square kilometres, before retreating again. The Breheimsenteret museum lies 11 km to the south. A cracked tongue of blue-white ice descends between smooth grey granite walls, with the lake Nigardsbrevatnet and its milky green water in front. High mountains with forested lower slopes surround the valley, and rock polished by the ice shows along its path. Visitors cross the lake by small boat towards the ice front and walk a rocky path close to it, and there is also a bus to the glacier. Approaching the front or going onto the ice should be done only with an authorised guide, as there have been serious accidents; summer is the best season.
