Nilaveli Beach lies on Sri Lanka's east coast at the seaside town of Nilaveli, about 16 km northwest of Trincomalee. Long a Tamil village and a well-known resort, it has seen visitor numbers climb again since 2010. The name Nilaveli refers to moonlight over open land. Just 1 km offshore lies Pigeon Island National Park, one of the region's two marine national parks, known for its coral, reef fish and plant life. Tamil inscriptions of the 10th century found at Nilaveli record farmland set aside to support the Koneswaram temple. The long beach has fine golden sand and fairly calm blue water, fringed by palms and colourful fishing boats. Sunrise is lovely here, the sun lifting straight out of the sea and painting the sky and water pink and gold. Visitors swim and laze on the sand, and many take boats out to Pigeon Island to snorkel among the reefs. The east coast sea is usually calmest from about May to September.
