The museum of Ningbo's history and customs, opened on 5 December 2008 in Yinzhou district and designed by the architect Wang Shu, the first Chinese citizen to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2012; it is one of his best-known works. From outside the building looks like a carved mountain block, drawing on the mountains, waters and sea around Ningbo, and its walls are clad in bricks and tiles salvaged from old buildings demolished in the area, laid in a traditional local way while the architect left the builders free to arrange them, so every wall is different; inside, the halls tell the story of the city, its port and its people's customs. Entry is free without booking, Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm with last entry at 4 pm, closed on Mondays except public holidays, per visitor guides.
Old bricks and tiles.
A Pritzker winner.
And its port.
1000 Shounan Middle Road, Yinzhou District, Ningbo
It was designed by the Pritzker-winning architect Wang Shu, who clad its walls in bricks and tiles salvaged from demolished old buildings, so no two walls look alike.
