Ninh Kieu wharf is Can Tho's waterfront and its emblem, a riverside park on the Hau River where it meets the Can Tho River in the heart of the city. In the 19th century it was a landing at the head of the Can Tho market; the French faced it in stone and called it the Quai de Commerce, locals knew it as Hang Duong wharf after the row of casuarina trees along the bank, and it took the name Ninh Kieu in the late 1950s, when a park was laid out here. This is where visitor boats leave for the Cai Rang floating market and the orchard islands, and the wharf is busiest at dawn, when the boatmen gather. In February 2016 a footbridge of about 200 metres, curving in an S, opened across to Cai Khe islet, and coloured lights play over it in the evening. It is at its best after sunset, when the bank is lit and dinner boats pass on the river. A night market of food and souvenir stalls stands beside it, and nearby streets often close to traffic on weekend evenings. Boatmen can be pushy with their offers, so agree on the price and route before you board.
