The traditional market of Nizwa, Oman's capital in earlier ages, beside the fort and the mosque. It is a complex of arcaded Omani-style buildings around courtyards and covered lanes, each section with its own trade. Its sections sell Omani halwa, dates, spices and honey, Omani pottery of every shape, silverwork, khanjar daggers and their engraved sheaths, palm-leaf baskets and textiles, alongside markets for vegetables, fish and meat. Its best-known scene is the Friday morning livestock market, when sellers parade goats and cattle in a ring and bidding goes on amid the crowd, a traditional sight that draws visitors, per visitor guides. It starts early and is over before noon. Wandering is free. Early mornings are best, especially on Fridays, and the souq pairs easily with Nizwa Fort next door. Ask before photographing the traders.
