Nova Veneza, «New Venice», is a small town near Criciúma founded in 1891 by some four hundred families from the Veneto region of northern Italy, in a colony set up by a private company under an immigration law of the time. Most of today's residents are said to descend from those settlers, and Italian is taught in the local schools. The town carries the title of «National Capital of Traditional Italian Cuisine», and its restaurants are known for fresh pasta and home-style dishes. Its best-known sight is an authentic Venetian gondola named «Lucille», moored in a small lake in Praça Humberto Bortoluzzi. About 10.75 metres long and weighing some six hundred kilograms, it was presented to the town by authorities in the Venice region, and the municipality says it is one of only four official gondolas outside Italy. The square is free to visit and makes a pleasant short stop combined with an Italian-style lunch.
