The largest mosque in Central Asia and one of the largest in the world outside the Middle East. Its foundation stone was laid on 18 March 2019 and it was officially opened on 12 August 2022 as the Grand Republican Mosque, then formally named the «Nursultan Mosque» on 4 July 2026. It was built with private investment and no state budget funds. It is crowned by a huge dome almost 83.2 m high and 62 m across, surrounded by four 130 m minarets, each in five parts for the five pillars of Islam. One of the towers is open to visitors, with a lift up to views over the city. Its entrance door is one of the tallest wooden doors in the world, 12.4 m high and weighing one and a half tonnes, made of hard African iroko wood and carved with Kazakh patterns. The outer walls carry white Arabic script on a blue background, and inside are handmade stained-glass windows, carpets with sweeping patterns and vast ring chandeliers. Entry is free. It is a working mosque, so dress modestly, women cover their hair, and prayer times are best avoided.
