The Finnish forest forty minutes from the capital: Nuuksio is a national park of rock, pine and eighty small lakes west of Helsinki, reached by train and bus to Haukkalampi lake where three marked loop trails begin (2, 4 and 8 kilometres) among rocks, bogs and lake shores, with public fire pits and free firewood for grilling. The flying squirrel is the park's emblem, wild berries and mushrooms may be picked by all under Finland's right of nature, and the lakes are swum in summer. At the southern entrance the Haltia nature centre holds exhibitions, a restaurant and a view, with rentable tents and huts around it. Finland's easiest wilderness trip: a full day in good boots, or half a day on the short loop. Autumn is golden, winter snow and silence.
