Unique shape.
O Frade e a Freira, the Friar and the Nun, is an unusual rock formation in southern Espírito Santo, protected by an 861-hectare reserve holding characteristic fragments of Atlantic Forest. It spans Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Itapemirim and Vargem Alta, north of the road between Cachoeiro and Rio Novo do Sul. The rock rises to 683 metres and can be climbed by visitors. It was declared state natural cultural heritage on 12 June 1986 and a natural monument by decree on 6 September 2007, and it became part of the Central Atlantic Forest Ecological Corridor. Its name comes from a local legend about a friar and a nun working together among the Indigenous people who fell in love; forbidden to act on it, their passion was turned to stone for every passer-by to see. The rock is clearly visible from the road and draws climbers and photographers; it suits a short stop or half a day.
