Oberá is the second city of Misiones province, home to some eighty thousand people among green hills, forests and streams at the heart of the province, nicknamed the «Capital of the Forest». It was founded by immigrants, and more than fifteen communities still keep their ancestors' culture, languages and traditions; its economy rests on yerba mate, tea and timber. Its best-known sight is the Parque de las Naciones, where each community has built a house in the style of its homeland: European timber houses, an Italian house with columns, a Japanese house, an Argentine pavilion and more, among lawns and trees; the great immigrants' festival is held here every year. The city also has a thermal water park, Termas de la Selva, the Berrondo waterfall and a bird garden. Wandering the Parque de las Naciones is free, and Oberá makes a comfortable base for central Misiones.
