The Obersee, the Upper Lake, is a natural lake in the far southeast of the Berchtesgadener Land district of Bavaria, Germany, near the Austrian border, about 13 km south of Berchtesgaden in a straight line. The whole lake lies within Berchtesgaden National Park, southeast of the much larger Königssee. A moraine separates the two lakes. A huge rockfall in 1172 is sometimes said to have divided them, but the Obersee was most likely always separate. There are no villages near the lake; the only dwelling is the small Fischunkelalm hut, occupied only in summer. The clear green lake lies among towering grey mountain walls on every side, its still surface mirroring the peaks and forest. A small wooden boathouse with a walkway into the water stands on its shore, with green meadows at its edges. Visitors take a boat across the Königssee to its southern end, then walk a short way to the Obersee, and some continue along its shore to the Fischunkelalm. It is busy in summer, and early morning is quieter and best for reflections.
