The Antares Astronomical Observatory in Feira de Santana, Bahia, was founded in 1971 by Augusto César Pereira Orrico and joined the State University of Feira de Santana in 1992. Besides the observatory it has a library specialising in astronomy and physics, opened in 1997, and the Antares Museum of Science and Technology, opened in 2009. The museum has a section of interactive science experiments for children and teenagers that welcomes schools free of charge, and a full-size replica of the famous Bendegó meteorite, found in 1784 in the Bahian backlands and sent to the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro. The observatory also keeps real meteorites donated by a local resident after its experts confirmed what they were. The observatory runs refresher courses in astronomy for teachers and a children's programme during the January holidays, and its walls carry graffiti murals depicting the history of the universe from its beginnings.
