The Oficina Brennand is the museum and studio of the Pernambuco ceramic artist Francisco Brennand, who built it from 1971 on the ruins of the São João brick and tile works his father founded in 1917, in the historic Várzea district of western Recife, among remnants of Atlantic forest and the waters of the Capibaribe River. It is a monumental complex in constant change: some 2,000 works, from sculptures and murals to paintings and drawings, fill its courtyards and halls, with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx. Brennand's great themes are the origin of life and the eternity of things, often drawn from Greek and Roman mythology. Many of the works are nude figures or sensual forms, which families may want to know before visiting.
