Ol Pejeta is a large wildlife conservancy in central Kenya, right on the equator. Grassy plains are dotted with acacias, herds of animals graze on the horizon, and the sharp peak of Mount Kenya rises above the clouds to the east. It covers 360 km² and is a not-for-profit conservancy between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. It holds the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, which reached 100 rhinos in 2013. It is home to the last two known northern white rhinos, moved here from a zoo in the Czech Republic. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary here is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, and the Big Five all live in the conservancy. You drive through the conservancy watching wildlife, see rhinos with Mount Kenya behind them, and visit the chimpanzee sanctuary. The conservancy is about 24 km in a straight line west of Nanyuki. Animals are most active early in the morning and late in the day, so plan your drives for then, and stay inside the vehicle.
