The Old Friday Mosque, also known as the Badjanani Mosque, is a white mosque on the old harbour front of Moroni, capital of the Comoros. It is the city's best-known landmark, with a two-storey arcade of many arches and a square white minaret mirrored in the harbour water. The narrow lanes of the old town surround it. The mosque is said to have been built in 1427, a sign of Moroni's wealth when it was part of the Indian Ocean trade networks. Moroni means «at the river» in the language of Grande Comore. The islands' ties to Swahili and Arab culture go back centuries and still show in the old town's architecture. You see a long white building with two rows of repeating arches and a square minaret topped by a small dome, on the edge of a sea wall. Before it lie the calm harbour water and colourful wooden fishing boats. Behind it rise the houses of the old town and above them the green slopes of Mount Karthala. It stands in the heart of old Moroni, close to the town's lanes. Non-Muslims usually view it from outside. Dress modestly and avoid prayer times. The finest photos come at sunset from across the harbour.
