Montreal's historic riverfront, running about two and a half kilometres along the St. Lawrence in front of the old city, once the city's commercial port and now a public park with walking and cycling paths and green squares. Along the port stand the white Clock Tower, a memorial to sailors whose steps can be climbed for a view of the river, the Grande Roue observation wheel, the interactive Montreal Science Centre for families, and in winter an open-air ice rink. Right behind the port are Old Montreal's cobbled streets, with stone buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, best known among them Rue Saint-Paul, Place Jacques-Cartier full of painters and street performers in summer, and the silver-domed Bonsecours Market. Walking the port and the old town is free at any time, and activities such as the wheel and the Science Centre charge. Summer evenings, when the squares fill with life, are loveliest.
