The old heart of Bizerte and its prettiest corner: a quiet canal lined with brightly painted fishing boats and framed by the white-and-blue houses of the medina and the walls of the kasbah. Bizerte is the northernmost city of Africa on the Mediterranean. At one end of the port stands the kasbah with its stone walls, still lived in today along narrow lanes inside the ramparts. On the other bank lies the medina, with its mosques, the octagonal minaret of its Great Mosque, and small souks. Stroll the quays among fishermen mending their nets, sit in a café over the water, then climb to the Spanish fort on the hill for a view over the port and the town. Bizerte is an easy day trip from Tunis and pairs well with nearby Ichkeul National Park. It is known for fresh fish in the harbour restaurants and for sandy beaches north of town.
