Omiš is a town and port in Dalmatia where the Cetina river meets the Adriatic, about 22 km southeast of Split in a straight line. About 14,000 people live in the municipality. Its name probably comes from an old word meaning «rock» or «cliff», after the rocky promontory it stands on, and in Roman times it was known as Oneum. In the Middle Ages its people were known as seafarers who controlled shipping along this coast. Two fortresses on the rocks guard the town: Mirabela near the centre and Fortica high above. The green Cetina river emerges from a narrow canyon between towering grey rock walls and flows past the old town before reaching the sea. Stone houses and narrow lanes cluster on the riverbank beneath the cliff, and colourful boats moor at the river mouth. Rafting and canyoning are organised in the canyon, and a zipline runs above it. Visitors climb to Fortica fortress for a view over the river and the sea, or take a boat up the river. The town has a sandy beach near the river mouth.
