Onomichi is a city in southeastern Hiroshima Prefecture, western Japan, facing the Seto Inland Sea, about 68 km east of Hiroshima in a straight line. Its intricate coastline is part of Setonaikai National Park, and Senkoji Park sits on the hill above it. The city centre lies in a narrow band along the coast with very little flat land, so houses and temples climb the hillsides; its unusual scenery has made it a frequent film location. Its climate is humid subtropical, with cool to mild winters and hot, humid summers. Small ferries and bridges link it to the islands opposite. From Senkoji Park on the hilltop the view opens over the city's stepped rooftops and the narrow channel between the city and Mukaishima Island, crossed by ferries and ships, with bridges and green islands in the distance and a wooden pagoda on the slope. Visitors ride the ropeway up to the park or walk the «Path of Literature» past houses and temples, then wind down through narrow lanes to the waterfront. The famous Shimanami Kaido cycling route across the islands starts here.
