The city museum of Ordos in the new Kangbashi district, opened in May 2012 and designed by the Chinese architect Ma Yansong's firm MAD as a curving metal mass like a wind-polished rock, its design said to draw on the Gobi Desert; it stands in the middle of a broad square. Inside, a large open space holds galleries on six levels telling the story of the Ordos region and its surroundings: dinosaur and extinct-animal skeletons, ancient bronzes and pottery, Mongolian chess sets and horse-head fiddles, and scenes of steppe customs. Entry is free with a booking, foreign visitors bring their passport, and it is closed on Mondays except public holidays, per visitor guides.
