A Serbian Orthodox monastery set into an almost vertical cliff face high on the rock of Ostroška Greda, near Danilovgrad, as if carved into the mountain, and the most visited pilgrimage site of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It was founded in the early seventeenth century by Saint Basil of Ostrog, Metropolitan of Herzegovina, who is buried here, and draws more than a million visitors a year of many faiths. It has a lower and an upper monastery; the upper is the famous one, with two small churches cut into the rock and white walls on the cliff. Its terrace looks out over the Bjelopavlići plain and the mountains. Entry is free, in modest dress covering shoulders and knees; coverings are lent at the gate if needed. The road up is narrow and winding, so arrive in the morning before the crowds.
