Otranto is a coastal town and small port in the province of Lecce in Apulia, southern Italy, on the east coast of the Salento peninsula, about 36 km southeast of Lecce in a straight line. It belongs to «The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy». The Strait of Otranto, named after the town, links the Adriatic with the Ionian Sea and separates Italy from Albania. About five kilometres southeast of the town stands the Palascìa lighthouse, marking the easternmost point of the Italian mainland. The area was once famous for a breed of horses. The old town, with white stone walls and a castle, sits on a small headland above the sea, with narrow cobbled lanes winding between white houses. In front lie a small harbour and a sandy beach with very clear turquoise water, and rocky coast with small coves and cliffs runs either side. Visitors wander the old town lanes and walls, visit the castle and swim at the beach below. Many drive to the Palascìa lighthouse to watch sunrise from Italy's easternmost point, and the town makes a day trip from Lecce.
