The city's mountain across the river: Ounasvaara is a 200-metre forested hill facing Rovaniemi over the water, reached by the illuminated Lumberjack's Candle Bridge — in winter a small ski resort with lifts, slopes, cross-country tracks and toboggan runs, in summer walking trails, a summer toboggan, a bike trail and a golf course. At the top a free timber observation tower looks over the city, the meeting of the two rivers and forest to the horizon — and it is the town's best place to watch the aurora at night away from the lights, or the midnight sun in June. The Lappish hut Sky Ounasvaara at the summit is a restaurant with a view. From the centre half an hour on foot over the bridge or minutes by bus; children's sledging in winter and walking in summer are entirely free, making it the natural counterweight to the village's prices.
