Lampung's best-known island, in Lampung Bay south of the city, famous for clear water, coral reefs close to the surface and colourful fish, which have made it the area's snorkelling hub, drawing visitors from Lampung and Jakarta at weekends. The island is usually visited on a full-day boat trip from Ketapang harbour or elsewhere on the coast, stopping at several snorkelling spots, among them underwater coral gardens, and passing small neighbouring islands such as white-sand Pahawang Kecil, with lunch on the beach. Prices vary a lot by group size and trip type; shared trips start from about two hundred thousand rupiah per person, usually including the boat and snorkelling gear, while private boats cost more. The islands are rural with simple facilities. Set off early, as the sea is calmer in the morning, ask about life jackets for children, and bring modest swimwear and sun cream. The island gets crowded on public holidays; weekdays are quieter.

Yes with a life jacket: most snorkel spots are fairly shallow and guides help beginners. But never enter the water without a jacket if you cannot swim.
