Palácio Boa Vista is the official winter residence of the governor of São Paulo state, in Campos do Jordão, the mountain town in the Mantiqueira range known for its cool climate and European-style architecture. Building began in 1938 and finished in 1964, and since 1970 it has been open to visitors as an art centre while remaining the government's winter seat. The palace displays more than 1,800 works of art, including pieces by leading Brazilian artists, and collections of applied arts and crafts. Beside it stand a small chapel and a Japanese-style bell tower. Visits are free, in accompanied groups formed every twenty minutes, without booking and on a first-come basis, so arrive at opening in busy seasons.
