A grand French-style mansion in Cochabamba, built between 1915 and 1927 for businessman Simón I. Patiño, the «Tin King», whose Bolivian mines made him one of the richest men of his age. Ironically he never lived in it, spending most of his life in Europe. Its materials and decoration came from Europe: Italian marble, carved wood, ornate ceilings, mirrors and chandeliers, and walls hung with silk. One of its most curious rooms is in Andalusian Arab style, inspired by the Alhambra in Granada. The mansion is surrounded by broad French and Japanese-style gardens with trees, fountains and statues, and today it is a cultural centre of the Patiño Foundation, hosting exhibitions and concerts and shown on guided tours. Cochabamba has a mild climate, nicknamed the «city of eternal spring», and is known for its local cooking. Tour times change, so check before going. Bolivia is under a state of emergency with protests and road blockades, so check road conditions and your government's travel advice before the trip.
