Modern classical.
The Palácio Rio Branco is the seat of the Acre state government in its capital, Rio Branco. Built in 1930 in a style that reworks classical elements and blends them with modern Art Deco, it stands as a symbol of the city's modernisation at a time when its buildings were all of wood. When the politician Hugo Ribeiro Carneiro was appointed governor of Acre, most people lived in the countryside. The foundation stone was laid on 15 June 1929, many members of the territory's public force worked on the building, and it was inaugurated unfinished in 1930, then completed gradually until its full opening under governor Guiomard Santos. The palace is open to the public with free entry. The first floor welcomes visitors with furniture, objects, photographs and documents on the state's history, while the second floor is reserved for official business. Travel guides list daytime opening Tuesday to Friday and evening hours at weekends; check times before going.
