Palaui is a green, hilly island off the northeastern tip of Luzon. Grassy hills slope to the sea, rocky cliffs take the waves, small beaches tuck into coves and rocky islets stand in the blue water. The island is a protected area and national park, the Palaui Island Protected Landscape and Seascape, in the municipality of Santa Ana. It is 10 km long and about 5 km wide. A reef runs out from its east side, and the rocky Dos Hermanos islets lie off Cape Engaño at its northern point. It has been declared a national marine reserve. You walk across the grassy hills to see the Dos Hermanos islets and the waves, and swim at the calmer beaches, seeing the reef running off its east side and the small wooded island of Rona to the south. The island is about 12 km in a straight line north of the town of Santa Ana, reached by boat from San Vicente port. The trails are exposed to the sun, so bring water and a hat, and the surf is strong on the open side.
