China's largest museum of fossils, opened on 21 May 2011 in the north of Shenyang, in a building inspired by rock faults, lava and a giant dinosaur; visitors first climb an outside stairway to the fourth floor and then work their way down floor by floor through the geological ages. Its eight halls tell the story of life on Earth, and the stars are the fossils of the Jehol biota for which Liaoning is famous, including the feathered dinosaur Sinosauropteryx, the early bird Confuciusornis and Archaefructus, among the oldest known flowering plants, alongside a hall of Liaoning's large dinosaurs that families and children love. Entry is free with real-name advance booking through the museum's WeChat account or the Meituan app, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9.30 am to 4 pm, closed on Mondays and Thursdays except public holidays, per visitor guides.
