The Paleta del Pintor, the Painter's Palette, is a line of hills behind the small village of Maimará in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, their slopes banded in red, pink, yellow, green and violet like paint spread on an artist's palette. The village itself is known for its colours, ringed by small orchards that supply nearby villages with fruit and vegetables. The hills are seen from a viewpoint right beside National Route 9, with the village's colourful cemetery on the slope in front, so the scene mixes small buildings and coloured mountain. Most travellers stop here between Purmamarca and Tilcara. The viewpoint is free and the stop short. The colours are richest in the afternoon, when the sun lights the hills from the west.
