Palmácia is a small town in the Serra de Baturité hills of Ceará, some 74 kilometres from Fortaleza, part of the Serra de Guaramiranga tourist circuit and classed as an ideal town for eco and adventure tourism. It lies within the Serra de Baturité Environmental Protection Area, on the Pacoti River ecological corridor and inside the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve. Settlement began in the eighteenth century when the Indigenous Baturité people took refuge here from a great drought across Ceará and the North-East, with settlers arriving later. It lives from farming and tourism, growing bananas, coffee and vegetables in its green countryside. Visitors come for forest trails, waterfalls and the Pacoti River, and for a climate cooler than the coast; it is the closest of the hill towns to Fortaleza.
