Palolem Beach is in Canacona in South Goa, India, 2.5 km from the market town of Chaudi and about 57 km southeast of Panaji in a straight line. The nearby beaches of Agonda and Patnem flank it. The crescent-shaped beach runs for about a mile, and the whole of it can be seen from either end, where rocks jut into the sea. The water deepens gradually and is shallowest at the northern end, and the currents are not fast, so it suits average swimmers. Local fishermen and foreign visitors live along it, in shacks on the sand or in the village. Colourful wooden shacks line the golden sand under dense coconut palms, wooden fishing boats rest on the beach, and green hills and a small island look over the bay. At sunset the sky and water turn orange. Visitors swim in the calm water, walk the sand and take fishermen's boats around the bay. The season runs from October to March, and the nearest railway station is at Canacona.
