**Because the stone is here for nothing — and the mountain dictates what you build with.** ✅ **The material**: Thassos is **emphatically a stone island** — marble and metamorphic rock, **and some of its beds split naturally into flat slabs** (schist and marble sheets). **So the material is in the mountain itself**, needing no kiln and no import. ⚠ **Unlike tile**, which requires **suitable clay, firing kilns and transport** — **all of which cost**. ✅ **The performance**: stone roofs are **very heavy** — ⚠ a structural drawback requiring thick walls and strong timbers; ✅ **but they resist mountain wind** and do not blow away, **they insulate** so houses stay cool in summer and warm in winter, **and they last centuries** with almost no maintenance. ✅ **The technique**: the slabs are laid **overlapping like scales** from the bottom up, **usually without mortar** — **gravity and the overlap keep the water out**. ✅ **And the style is not Thassos's alone**: you see it in **Pelion**, **Zagori** and **the mountain villages of Macedonia** — **wherever stone was cheaper than clay**. ⚠ **Today it is expensive**, because the craft is rare.

**A mountain village of stone-slab roofs with water channels running through its lanes** — on the slope above Golden Beach, 10 km from Limenas. It is **Thassos's prettiest village** and the one that has kept its shape best: stone houses **roofed in grey stone slabs** (not tiles), **wooden balconies** and **narrow paved lanes** — ⚠ **some of them carrying open channels of mountain spring water**, so you hear it running as you walk. ✅ At its centre is a **square beneath huge plane trees** with a fountain, and the **church of the Dormition** with a stone roof and bell tower, holding inlaid icons. ✅ From the village there is an **open view** over the plain and the bay of **Golden Beach** — the island's longest stretch of sand. ⚠ The village is **very steep**.
