Panemunė Castle is a historic castle on the banks of the Nemunas in western Lithuania, about 63 km west of Kaunas and 9 km west of Raudonė Castle in a straight line. The site's origins go back to the Middle Ages, and it has been rebuilt many times. The site mattered because of its place on the Nemunas, the region's main trade waterway. The earliest traces of a castle date from the 14th century. After the Battle of Grunwald it lost its military role and was used for administration and housing, and the present Renaissance building dates from the early 17th century. The castle's white walls, round towers and red roofs stand around an inner courtyard on a slope above the Nemunas valley, surrounded by a park and terraced ponds, and its towers are mirrored in the ponds on calm days. Visitors walk the courtyard and park, see the exhibitions inside and look out over the river valley. Art exhibitions are sometimes held here, and visitors often combine it with nearby Raudonė Castle.
