China's largest antique and second-hand market, at Panjiayuan in south-east Beijing by the East Third Ring Road, with more than four thousand shops and stalls run by dealers from twenty-eight Chinese provinces and regions. On sale are old furniture and reproductions, calligraphy brushes, ink and ink stones, ceramics, jade, coins, old books, shadow-puppet figures and folk costumes. The shops and covered halls open every day, while the open-air stalls fill the whole ground at weekends, Saturday being the busiest day. Many pieces are modern reproductions, so bargain, and buy for the look rather than as an investment. Entry is free; the market opens at 9 am on weekdays, 6 am on Saturdays and 7 am on Sundays, and stays open until 8 or 9 pm, with a night market until 11 pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, per visitor guides.
