Pannonhalma Archabbey is a huge Benedictine monastery on top of a green hill in western Hungary, with long white and yellow buildings, a domed classical church tower and stone walls, ringed by vineyards, forest and the wide plain. It was founded in 996, making it one of Hungary's oldest historic monuments, and stands on a 282 m hill. Saint Martin of Tours is believed to have been born at its foot. It is the second largest territorial abbey in the world after Monte Cassino. It holds a church with a 13th-century crypt, cloisters, a monumental library of 400,000 volumes and a Baroque refectory. The abbey and its surroundings were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. You tour the church, cloisters and great library with a guide, then walk the herb garden and the paths around the hill. It is about 17 km in a straight line southeast of Győr. Monks still live here, so dress modestly and keep quiet.
