Pântano do Sul is a fishing village at the southern tip of Florianópolis island, with fine sand; it is seen as a typical picture of the city's old fishing colonies, with several seafood restaurants. It became a district in 1966. Its beach held a large sambaqui, a prehistoric shell mound, studied by Father Rohr in the 1970s; it yielded stone carvings of animals, human remains and pottery from three successive cultures, now kept at the Museu do Homem do Sambaqui in central Florianópolis. The shortest trail to Lagoinha do Leste beach starts in the village, about 2.3 km but steep.
