Papuk is the largest mountain in the Slavonia region of eastern Croatia, near the city of Požega, about 18 km north of Požega and 78 km west of Osijek in a straight line. Its highest peak, also called Papuk, rises to 953 metres, and the area is a protected nature park. In 2007 Papuk Geopark became Croatia's first geopark and the thirtieth member of the European and UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, and its membership was renewed in 2011. Its name is probably not of Croatian origin, and some scholars think it was first the name of a stream. Dense beech and oak forests cover the park, turning red and gold in autumn. At Jankovac a small, clear emerald lake lies among the woods, and nearby the Skakavac waterfall slides over moss-covered rocks, reached by paths and wooden steps. Visitors walk the forest trails between the lake and the waterfall, stroll around Jankovac lake, and some climb the peaks for views over the Slavonian plains. The park is quiet and uncrowded, and spring and autumn are the loveliest seasons.
